Are Gibson's affordances only present in the classroom or communication settings? This helps conceptualize the scale of affordances to me... is my conceptualization in line with yours?

So... when a teacher provides an example to a vocabulary word within an instructional format, does she then make an affordance for her student's conceptualization of the word? Did me, in providing a video for you, change the way you'll remember this information?

If this information was not in sync with your idea of an affordance, did I just confuse you even more? Even if your original idea of an affordance was more correct than my idea?

my dopplegangers

this past year there was a whole celebrity doppleganger movement on facebook. i'm lucky enough to have courtney in some of my classes, who is my real life doppleganger. so much that when my mom came to visit and attended an english class with me last semester, mother dearest actually followed courtney out of the classroom, thinking it was me.

i didn't really see the similarities between courtney and myself until i visited her facebook. i flipped through the pictures, and some of them i could have sworn were myself. i remember thinking "holy smokes... i got married!" the pictures prove it.

blogs are fun to read, and today i think i found my future adult mama doppleganger.

boyfriend and i downloaded tons of podcasts for our weekend trip to and from san diego. there was a really good one from our beloved josh and chuck from "stuff you should know" on the topic of japanese stragglers.

long story short, japan sent out soldiers to islands in the pacific to fight and pillage and plunder. when the war was over, the japanese didn't quite pass the memo along to everyone in their army. the mass text was not received by these island brigades, probably because cellular communication was years and years away from invention. but i digress.

hiroo onoda and four of his favorite friends continued fighting WWII on the Philippine island of Lubang. in 1950 one of the men surrendered (and then there were four...), and surprised his comrades by reporting back that the war was over; in fact, it had been for five years.

rightfully so, lieutenant onoda and friends didn't believe this, thinking their former comrade to be a traitor trying to lure his unit out of the jungle. they continued to fight through the remainder of the 1950s and entirely through the 1960s. all but onoda perished.

in the 1970s a Japanese college-dropout leaves Japan on a world tour of (self) discovery, looking for Lieutenant Onoda, a panda, and the Abominable Snowman (in that order).

He was successful on at least one of the goals.

Lieutenant Onoda spent 29 years of his life fighting WWII. talk about dedication!

oh you podcasts, you get me every time.

sometimes, you upload new podcasts on tuesdays.

just when i get used to this plan, you upload on a monday.

i'm left jumping for joy.

until tuesday, when no new podcast blue bubble exists.

i'm left to find other podcasts to fill my needs.

and the cycle continues itself.

Media and Baby Obesity

My cousin Jenni is an awesome Mama.

When it comes to TV, she really limits the time that her twin toddlers spend in front of the tube (even though she is 6 months pregnant with a husband working full time AND getting a masters). She is a saint. I'm pretty sure she will be canonized soon, so look out for the Book of Jenni.

I digress.

Yesterday, I stopped by their house for a little bit. Both girls have the croup, so I came for a little extra snuggling time. Jenni, bless her soul, voiced regret that the girls were watching their second movie of the day. Even though they are sick (and boy, those babies were BURNING UP!).

But let me tell you, this entire family is FIT!!! Maybe it is caused by their lack of TV viewing?

Both the girls have toddler sized abs that you could wash clothes on. Crazy!!! And their Mama ran a marathon... pregnant! Wow-ie-wow!

Jenni is definitely a hero of mine!

am i the only one who wants to fast forward life for only a brief few minutes? after all of this human development learning, i want to see a little snippet of my future life. how will i be as a mother? a wife?

i'm pretty sure i need to be in the movie 'click'. why did adam sandler have to fast forward through the parts of his life that i want to see in my future?

can it really be all that overwhelming, to make a parent want to skip through life?

while this technology does not yet exist, i am resorting to a business plan.
